A CELEB manicurist says we've been doing our nails all wrong and you could be causing damage.
Amy Hide – who counts Harry Styles, Georgia May Jagger and Strictly's Katya Jones among her clients – revealed what we should be doing instead.
She told Femail: "'Always protect the nails’ is a number one rule. Wear gloves when cleaning and washing up and don’t use your nails as tools, like picking that pesky label off the new plant pot you just bought."
Amy also warned against using at-home gel kits – comparing it to bleaching your hair at home.
"We have seen a huge increase in damaged nails," she said, linking it to the use of supermarket kits.
"If you are choosing to do your gels or enhancements at home, enrol onto a course with a reputable academy or your favourite brand."
And if you are going to a salon, Amy says you should check the reviews first and go to one using branded products – like CND, NSI and Artistic.
She added: "Ensure you are able to view the team members qualifications and are able to communicate with you are able to advise the right nails for you depending on your desired look and outcome.
"Red flags for me are high staff turn around, mixing product brands and restricted payment methods eg. Cash only."
In terms of nail care, Amy recommends using a cuticle oil every DAY – to "reduce chances of hang nails, and (keep) the natural nails nourished and flexible underneath your gels or enhancements."
Earlier today, one woman revealed how her first attempt at false lashes left her eyes being stuck OPEN with glue.
