Hollywood actress Ellen Pompeo is facing backlash for “disrespecting” actor Denzel Washington on the set of Grey’s Anatomy. The actress has played Meredith Grey throughout the show’s 17 seasons and this week recounted a time she butted heads with The Equalizer actor, who was guest producing an episode in 2016, claiming that he “doesn’t know s***” about acting.
This is my set. Who are you telling?
But after hearing the star’s version of events, many fans have hit back at Ellen.
She had told her co-star Patrick Dempsey: “This is a good Denzel story,” saying that she and the Oscar-winning producer had gone “at it” on set after she gave direction to another actor.
She went on: “[The other actor] made this choice to speak very softly,” before explaining that her character was annoyed to listen to their apology without any eye contact
Consequently, Ellen said: “I yelled at him.
“I was like, ‘Look at me when you apologise. Look at me’,” she said in an episode of her podcast, Tell Me With Ellen Pompeo.
“And that wasn’t in the dialogue.
“And Denzel went ham on my ass,” she claimed.
Ellen went on to tell Patrick, who played Derek Shepherd in the medical drama: “I was like, ‘Listen, motherf***er, this is my show.
“This is my set. Who are you telling? You barely even know where the bathroom is’.”
Ellen went on to claim that the Man on Fire star only agreed to direct the season 12 episode as his wife, Pauletta Washington, is a “big fan” of the series.
She continued to fume: “Denzel’s a movie star, right?
“He doesn’t know s*** about directing TV,” admitting that she refused to speak or look at him for the rest of the day.
The star also said that she told his spouse about the disagreement when she came to visit the set.
Despite retelling the anecdote through laughter, Ellen has faced backlash over the way she responded to Denzel, as well as for retelling her version of events nearly a decade later.
Many took to social media to reveal that they were shocked that the star had even brought it up.
@Retracasil wrote on Twitter: “Exactly what good did Ellen Pompeo think was going to come from telling that story?”
@HeyokaEmpath01 penned: “First of all, nobody disrespects Denzel Washington; second, who the hell is Ellen Pompeo?”
While @athena242020 added: “I still can’t believe the twit that is Ellen Pompeo would admit, brag even, about disrespecting Denzel Washington!”
However, defending the [email protected] wrote: “I love Ellen and Denzel. I’m pretty sure many actors and actresses have went crazy on each other, whether they are sharing the screen or directing it. No one is perfect.” (sic)
@Jenn21vela added: “I really hope that Ellen Pompeo never quits the show!”
