Former Strictly Come Dancing pro Kevin Clifton, 38, has opened up about the next step in his career, after his plans for a career in the West End were put on hold. The star – who won Strictly in 2018 with dance partner and now girlfriend Stacey Dooley, 38 – teased fans earlier on Instagram, saying he had a “big announcement” lined up for ITV breakfast show Good Morning Britain.
I am unbelievably excited to be joining the cast of Jeff Wayne’s The War Of The Worlds
Speaking to his first Strictly partner Susanna Reid, the star revealed his big news.
“I can finally say that I’m joining the cast of Jeff Wayne’s musical version of The War of the Worlds for their big arena tour in 2022,” he gushed.
The star went on to describe the sheer magnitude of the stage production.
He said: “It’s a massive production with fire and lasers and a big martian spaceship, a bridge that goes right across the audience of the arena that I’m going to be running across, live orchestra on stage.”
Kevin continued and revealed that he followed a long line of stars who had played the coveted role.
“It’s a huge production basically and I’m going to be playing the artilleryman, which was first made famous by David Essex and it’s been played by Ricky Wilson and Adam Garcia.”
The show also features former Steps member Claire Richards as well as a 3D holographic appearance by Hollywood actor Liam Neeson.
Musical geiius Jeff Wayne is set to conduct the live orchestra.
Last night the podcast host took to social media where he teased news of “announcing something awesome”.
In a follow up, the star confirmed the news following his ITV appearance.
He wrote: “I am unbelievably excited to be joining the cast of Jeff Wayne’s The War Of The Worlds.
“In 2022 this particular story could not be more relevant.
“After so long without live performance, what better experience could there be than this spectacular arena production complete with a full live onstage orchestra and special effects.”
He ended the post: “Life Begins Again!”
Last year Kevin admitted to regretting leaving Strictly days before the coronavirus pandemic started.
He announced his departure from the favourite BBC show in March to pursue a career in the West End.
Speaking on his podcast The Kevin Clifton Show, he didn’t rule out a return to the dancefloor in the future: “Who knows if I’ll go back to Strictly, never say never.
“I think if I’ve learned anything it’s that you never close the door. You just don’t know how things are going to go.”
He added: “I thought I was going to be on stage all year and all of a sudden that’s not happening any more.”
Following the pandemic Kevin’s lead role in musical Strictly Ballroom is on hold.
