How to grow your hair long in seven easy steps

A model who lost 75 per cent of her hair due to an auto-immune condition and stress has revealed how she restored it to its lustrous best in seven simple steps.

Georgia Gibbs, 24, from Perth, said while once she had naturally full locks, this all changed at the start of 2017, when she started working as a model and began to struggle with her health.

‘Five years ago, I began losing my hair due to stress and a bunch of auto-immune and other health issues relating to anxiety, depression and general self-loathing,’ Georgia said on Instagram.

The hair loss led to increased stress and even more hair loss, meaning Georgia knew she had to take charge and do something different to grow it back.

Nearly three years later, the model said she has managed to restore her hair to its former glory, with the help of seven simple steps. 

‘So many people go to salons and get all these pricey treatments which stimulate the blood cells and stimulate hair growth,’ Georgia said in a YouTube video.

‘But you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars. I did it the all-natural and inexpensive way.’

1. Do a scalp massage with essential oils

The first thing Georgia said she did was a scalp massage every time she washed her hair with a couple of drops of rosemary essential oil.

‘You can buy all of the shampoos and conditioners in the world and they will definitely help, but nothing will work unless you get at that scalp and stimulate the circulation, as this is where growth comes from,’ Georgia said.

‘You only need three or four drops per use, and a bottle should last you around 100 washes,’ Georgia said.

To use the oil, the 24-year-old said she would mix her three or four drops with some coconut oil, before massaging it into the scalp.

‘I did a massage for about five minutes before I applied my shampoo, and then I washed it all out,’ Georgia said.

This is helpful because the massage will stimulate the hair follicles and get the blood flow going to help you to boost growth. 

Rosemary, like peppermint, also aids circulation – which will boost the length of your locks in no time.

‘Traditional Chinese medicine is a very powerful medicine and it can only be given to you by a practitioner,’ the model explained.

While she does know what is in her medicine, she said you can’t buy it over the counter, but if you have a herbalist close to you, this can be a great option.

3. Take marine collagen

Georgia revealed it has helped her hair infinitely, and she is a big fan of Vida Glow’s Marine Collagen, $59.95. 

‘You can choose any collagen you like, but I prefer marine collagen, partly because I don’t eat much meat and partly because it’s smaller, and so it’s easier to digest in your gut,’ Georgia said.

She will take the marine collagen daily, either in a glass of water or in her breakfast or smoothie, and has noticed great results since she begun.

‘Our hair is made up of a protein called keratin, and amino acids are the building blocks of protein, which collagen gives you,’ Georgia said.

The model’s nails have also never been more healthy.

4. Meditate each day

While you might not think it, stress has a major role to play in how lush and long our hair looks.

‘Stress is the leading cause of hair loss, apart from genetics,’ Georgia reminded.

‘And meditation has been shown to help to reduce stress in individuals from studies. Daily meditation for just 10 minutes per day is all you need.’

Georgia said she first started meditating in 2018, and while she initially found it difficult, nowadays she wouldn’t go a day without it.

5. Supplement with Omega 3s

Supplementation is all the rage right now, with many promising to give you the best hair of your life.

But Georgia said there is one simple supplement that you need in your diet if you want to grow your hair, and that is Omega 3s.

‘Omega 3s help to stimulate our scalps, keep them healthy and stop them from becoming dry and flaky,’ Georgia said.

‘A dry, flaking scalp is a big cause of hair loss, as you don’t want your scalp to be irritated.’

6. Use non-toxic hair products

If you’ve ever taken a second to read the back of your hair product bottles, you’ll know that they are often littered with confusing words.

But there are three Georgia said you should never want to see the back of any bottle: sulfates, parabens and artificial fragrances.

‘Sulfates are the same thing that is in your car wash soap, and they basically destroy the protective barrier that helps to keep our hair healthy,’ Georgia said.

‘Parabens and artificial fragrances, meanwhile, have been shown to mess with our hormones.’

Instead, the model said you should look for something that is as natural as possible – it will make a ‘big difference and often it’s not more expensive’.

7. Take iodine and zinc

The final things that Georgia used in her quest for better hair were iodine and zinc supplements, both of which have been shown to help grow your hair.

‘You need to be careful with iodine as while it can really benefit some people, for others it acts as a major trigger,’ Georgia said.

She also took Melrose Health Evening Primrose Oil, $26. 

‘Your supplements don’t have to be expensive, but they can help hugely,’ Georgia said.
