How to poach an egg on a hob and in the microwave

If the answer is poached, then we have some good news for you: there are many easy ways to make those delicious gooey eggs in just a few minutes.

And to make it even easier, you can even make your boujee breakfast in the microwave – just like scrambled eggs.

Here is all you need to know about preparing the perfect poached egg.

How to poach an egg

The thing about poaching an egg is you can get different outcomes depending on what your goals are.

For example, do you want the perfect Instagrammable brunch? If so, the step for this soft egg white with the perfect oozing yolk is as follows:

  • Crack your egg into a bowl or onto a saucer. If there is any very runny white surrounding the thicker white then tip this away
  • Add a drop of vinegar
  • Bring a pan of water filled at least 5cm deep to a simmer. Avoid adding salt as this may break up the egg white
  • Stir the water to create a gentle whirlpool to help the egg white wrap around the yolk
  • Slowly tip the egg into the centre. Make sure the heat is low enough not to throw the egg around – look for small bubbles starting to rise
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the white is set
  • Lift the egg out with a slotted spoon and drain it on kitchen paper. Trim off any white bits that are hanging off or look straggly.

This poached egg will give you aesthetics and flavour, but if you aren’t as fussed with how it looks, there’s an easier way to poach an egg.

  • Crack your egg into a bowl or onto a saucer
  • Bring a pan of water filled at least 5cm deep to a simmer
  • Tip the egg into the pan. The yolk should follow the white
  • Cook for 2 minutes then turn off the heat and leave the pan for 8-10 minutes
  • Lift the egg out with a slotted spoon and drain it on kitchen paper.

How to make poached eggs in the microwave

If you want to simplify the steps even further, you can poach your eggs in the microwave.

To do this, first fill a microwave-safe mug or small bowl with approximately one-third of a cup water and a splash of vinegar. The vinegar is optional, but it helps the egg blend.

Next, crack an egg into the mug or bowl, making sure it’s covered in water.

After this, pierce the egg yolk with a fork or toothpick to prevent any explosions.

Next, cover your mug or bowl with a small microwave-safe plate and microwave on high for one minute.

The egg white should be set but the yolk still runny. If the egg white is still runny, keep microwaving in 10-second increments until it’s looking how you want it to.

Remove the egg from the water with a slotted spoon and transfer it to a plate.
