Keely Hawes, 44, is best known for her performance in Line of Duty which gained her a BAFTA TV nomination. She also become a firm fixture on television screens in the edge of your seat drama The Bodyguard. No stranger to drama, Keely discusses her battle with mental health which she has suffered with since her teenage days.
Speaking to You magazine, the star bravely opened up about her mental health, revealing that she has lived with depression for years now.
Keeley said: “It’s something that never goes away. I think it is in your DNA if you suffer with it.
“I have become better equipped at looking after myself. I’ve tried various things over the years.
“Keeping busy helps, being forced to carry on, because inevitably it will pass.”

What are the symptoms of depression?
Depression symptoms vary from person to person, but there are some common signs of the condition.
Most commonly people who are depressed will feel sad, hopeless and a lack of interest in the things they enjoy.
Many people may feel down and sad sometimes, while depressed people have these feelings for weeks or months on end.
These are the most common psychological symptoms of depression, according to the NHS:
– Continuous low mood or sadness
– Feeling hopeless and helpless
– Low self-esteem
– Feeling tearful
– Feeling guilt-ridden
– Irritability and intolerance of others
– No motivation or interest in things
– Difficulty making decisions
– No enjoyment out of life
– Feeling anxious or worried
– Thoughts of suicide or self-harm
Looking after your mental health during lockdown
The lockdown can take its toll on one’s mental health both in terms of what it demands and also what it represents.
The lifting of restrictions can also prove traumatic for many people.
As the Mental Health Foundation (MF), noted, the idea of coming out of lockdown when the scientific debate is ongoing may also be worrying for those of us who are more at risk from the virus or living with mental health problems.
Fortunately, there are simple self-help tips that can alleviate mental health struggles.
Keeley also spoke about her frequent bouts of anxiety, something she openly deals with. She said: “It’s a very human thing, isn’t it, to worry about what you say and how you are perceived?” We couldn’t agree more.
Keely now tries to strive for the most positive take on everything.
“I really do. I think we are very good in this country at going the other way,” the actress said in an interview with The Guardian.
She has spoken before about experiencing periods of depression since her teens.
She said: “It’s part of it, isn’t it? You can get yourself very upset about things, and positive thinking is a very powerful thing, I’ve found.”
