Modern Warfare II to launch next year according to leaks, title confuses fans

Next year's Call of Duty will be a direct sequel to 2019's 'Modern Warfare'—and it looks 'amazing', according to a reliable industry insider.

Journalist Tom Henderson, who has previously revealed accurate information about games like Call of Duty and Battlefield 2042 way ahead of release, confirmed that the next game will be called "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II".

"I can confirm that the 2022 title is called 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II'. And the art work looks f*cking amazing*," Henderson said.

Henderson clarified that the title may not be final, but that he has "seen artwork" which says Modern Warfare II.

Fans of the franchise met the purported leak with some confusion. Just as 2019's 'Modern Warfare' game used the same title as 2007's Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare II would be almost identical to 2009's Modern Warfare 2.

"I don't see the issue, what's so confusing about Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II?" one Twitter user joked.

The key difference, insiders say, is that the new game uses Roman numerals instead of the number 2 in the title.

The story is reportedly set to focus on fighting drug cartels, with players taking up the mantle of the series' iconic 'Task Force 141', including iconic 'Modern Warfare' characters such as Ghost, Soap, and Gaz.

As with other Call of Duty games, Modern Warfare II will likely be integrated with the massive multiplayer battle royale 'Warzone'.

According to Henderson, the 2023 instalment of Call of Duty will be "semi-futuristic" with "boots on the ground", rather than the high-tech exosuits and fancy gadgets of games like 'Infinite Warfare'.

The newest instalment in the series, Call of Duty Vanguard, is set to be released on November 5. It sees the series return to its World War II roots as players fight back Nazi invaders in Stalingrad and other settings.
