May bank holiday will give most people a free day off this coming Monday. The spring bank holiday is the first of two this month, and people may want to use the occasion to complete some chores. Among them could be a trip to the supermarket, but their opening and closing times often vary.

What time does Tesco open this May bank holiday?

Supermarkets tend to stick to the same schedule during the week, with slight alterations on the weekend.

Generally, people can rely on opening and closing times to remain the same.

But on bank holidays some shops will change their hours to completely new times, and others may revert to Sunday hours.

Tesco has several store types, including superstores, Metro and Extra.

The three tend to run on similar schedules, with most open between 6am and 11pm on weekdays and Saturdays.

On Sundays, they reduce these hours slightly to 12pm to 6pm.

The coming bank holiday will see most stores open for 12 hours, many from 8am to 8pm.

But opening times will vary by area, with some likely to close earlier.

Times may vary by store type as well, as smaller shops sometimes stay open for longer.

People can check when their local shops close via Tesco’s handy search tool.

Available here, the store locator reveals the opening times of any shop.

Searchers need to input their local postcode, town or area for accurate results.

Those in need of a trip to Tesco will need to make sure they follow Covid rules, however.

Although the Government has started paring back its regulations, supermarket rules remain.

Some stores will limit the number of people allowed to enter, and customers must wear masks.

They should not enter the premises if they experience the following symptoms:

  • A new, continuous cough
  • A high temperature (38C+)
  • Loss of or change to sense of taste or smell
