With a decade since A Dance with Dragons was published, George RR Martin remains busy writing the next instalment in A Song of Ice and Fire. The 72-year-old author has previously said he hopes to finish The Winds of Winter in 2021 but has offered no promises. And now he’s given fans another update on his progress including his future writing plans for A Dream of Spring and more.

Martin’s latest blog post includes news on his other projects such as an adaption of Sandkings, the story he was best known for before A Song of Ice and Fire.

Plus TV projects like Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon and more for HBO and AMC that the author cannot talk about right now.

Getting on to The Winds of Winter at the end, he wrote: “You all know what is on my plate in prose.

“I need to finish WINDS, and then maybe write another Dunk & Egg novella.”

Martin added: “And then get right into A DREAM OF SPRING, and in between edit some more Wild Cards books.

“Once more into the breach, dear friends… Westeros beckons.”

The 72-year-old also added his current mood, unsurprisingly, as “busy”.

The fantasy author has previously been public about his planned writing schedule after The Winds of Winter and it sounds like he’s remaining on track.

Back in 2019, Martin attended a Q&A in London to promote his first volume of Fire & Blood. The Wertzone Blog was in attendance and noted his planned writing schedule going forwards:

1. The Winds of Winter

2. Dunk & Egg IV (either The She-Wolves or The Village Hero)

3. A Dream of Spring

4. Dunk & Egg V (either The Village Hero or The She-Wolves)

5. Fire & Blood II

The only real difference, for now, is Martin saying how he may (rather than will) pen Dunk & Egg IV after The Winds of Winter, presumably as a palate cleanser before tackling the epic conclusion to A Song of Ice and Fire in A Dream of Spring.

Fans of the author’s work will know that Dunk & Egg are a series of on-going novellas by Martin that are prequels to the main novels.

They follow a Hedge Knight called Ser Duncan the Tall, who becomes a legendary member of the Kingsguard.

Alongside his squire known as Egg, who goes on to become King Aegon V Targaryen.

Martin gave his last update on The Winds of Winter in early February via his blog.

He wrote: “I wrote hundreds and hundreds of pages of THE WINDS OF WINTER in 2020. The best year I’ve had on WOW since I began it.

“Why? I don’t know. Maybe the isolation. Or maybe I just got on a roll. Sometimes I do get on a roll.”

The Winds of Winter will hopefully be finished this year, but for all we know publication might not be until 2022.
