Emmerdale’s Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) just can’t seem to catch a break.
The stalwart of the ITV soap was over the moon when she was able to pay off the loan that villainous Paul Ashdale (Reece Dinsdale) had taken out in her name.
That, however, was merely the tip of the iceberg, as she’s since found herself embroiled in a dodgy pension scheme she knows nothing about.
Word of her alleged involvement in the scam has somehow leaked out, and therefore Lydia is public enemy number one.
‘She finds out that on the Community Crime Busters page that people have been posting comments about this pension scam,’ said actress Karen Blick, ‘and it’s been linked to her.
‘People have identified from the reports in the newspapers that it was Lydia. They’ve looped it back to her past and the awful tragedy that happened with her baby, so people are putting comments online about the scam and about her baby.’
The online abuse infuriates Sam (James Hooton) and Samson (Sam Hall), with the latter suggesting that perhaps Lydia should report it to the police.
Lydia, however, disagrees, hoping the whole thing will blow over. Unfortunately, the abuse gets worse, and before long, someone puts a brick through her window!
‘She’s terrified!,’ exclaimed Karen. ‘She’s trying to reassure Samson at the time that this is all probably going to blow over: “Let’s just ignore it and get on with her life”, and then the brick comes through the window.
‘At that point, she really begins to fear for her safety, and that of her family as well.’
Left with little choice, Lydia decides that it’s time the police were involved, and therefore she heads off to report the incident.
Her plan, unfortunately, is foiled – and she ends up in extreme danger as a result.
‘Lydia opens the car and puts her bag on the seat,’ Karen explained, telling us what happens next. ‘A young lad shouts to her – he shouts: “Lydia!”. She turns round and sees these two lads. She’s panicked initially, but then thinks they’re probably Samson’s friends.
‘They say: “No, actually, we’ve come to see you!”, and they’re quite threatening in their behaviour. Lydia is shocked, and she’s taken aback when they grab her handbag, and start going through it.
‘She’s worried and frightened – like anyone would be when they’re threatened outside their own home. She’s really shook up by the incident.’
Sam, thankfully, arrives in the nick of time to rescue Lydia from the thugs, but his response to the incident leaves Lydia concerned, as she worries about the possibility of her hubby getting in more trouble with the law.
‘Lydia wants to avoid violence at all costs’, Karen said. ‘Violence will lead to more violence and she doesn’t want that to escalate to where somebody is going to get hurt, or in trouble! She doesn’t want Sam in danger, or Samson, or any of the Dingles to end up in bother with the police.
The outcome of Lydia’s upsetting ordeal has yet to be revealed, and soap star Karen was keeping tightlipped on what will transpire, teasing that the storyline in question could end up with either a happy ending or a sad ending.
‘There is a resolution to this whole story for Lydia,’ she told us, ‘but I’m not going to tell you whether that is good or bad!’
We’ll just have to keep watching to find out!
