Netflix will update Elliot Page's name in credits as he comes out as trans

Netflix is changing Elliot Page’s name in the credits of projects he is involved in, it has been reported.

The Juno actor came out yesterday as transgender, confirming his pronouns are he/they, in a statement that has been praised and welcomed by the LGBTQ+ community and his colleagues and friends.

According to the New York Post, Netflix is in the process of updating Elliot’s name across the platform in the wake of his news.

Elliot’s name has already been updated on the Netflix cast lists for The Umbrella Academy, My Days Of Mercy, Tales of the City, Flatliners, Inception and Tallulah, which are available to stream on the service.

As of yet, the actor is still listed as his dead name, Ellen, in the episode credits of The Umbrella Academy.

However, the official IMDB page for the comic book series, in which Elliot plays Vanya, has been updated to reflect his name change.

According to reports, Elliot will continue to play the character of Vanya Hargreeves on the show, with no plans to change the gender of the cisgender female character.

Nick Adams, director of transgender media at GLAAD, told Variety: ‘Trans actors can and do play both trans and cisgender characters. I’m sure Elliot will continue to be brilliant in Umbrealla Academy and many different types of roles in the future.’

The Umbrella Academy has already been renewed for a third season, after its second dropped in July.

In an emotional statement, Elliot, 33, explained they are trans and wrote: ‘I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along the journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.’

After thanking the trans community, Elliot turned his attention to the political leaders ‘criminalising trans health care and denying our right to exist’, saying they have ‘blood on their hands’.

The actor wrote: ‘I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive. To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.’

In the wake of his statement, Elliot’s wife Emma Portner wrote on Instagram: ‘I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world.

‘I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.’

Elliot’s Umbrella Academy castmates also shared their love, with Tom Hopper writing: ‘Elliot, I’m so proud of you and even prouder to call you family. All the love.’

Outside of The Umbrella Academy, Elliot is best known for his Academy Award nominated role as Juno in the 2007 comedy, as well as for roles in Inception and X-Men: The Last Stand and Days of Future Past.

In 2014, Elliot came out as gay, and married dancer Emma four years later.
