Richard Madeley and Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid discussed Oxford University students’ decision to remove a portrait of the Queen on today’s edition of the ITV show. Students have reportedly agreed to take down the painting because “patriotism and colonialism are not really separable” but Richard branded those responsible “thick”.

Picking up a £10 note with the Queen’s face on it, the host remarked: “If you’re watching at Magdalen, you won’t be as you won’t be awake until nine, 10.

“But assuming that you are, would you rip this up? It’s got a picture of the Queen on it, bit of colonial culture going on there. So would you stop using cash?

“Actually, I can’t help think this is a wind-up because it’s so stupid. It’s really thick.”

“Have they not heard of the commonwealth?” Richard vented. “Do they not know what the commonwealth is?

“That the commonwealth – which the Queen has presided over – is actually the exit from colonialism? Do they not get this? Because these guys are supposed to be among the brightest in the land.

Later, Richard added: “It’s actually a very attractive portrait, isn’t it?”

“It’s a lovely picture I mean they are just exercising their freedom to vote in a democracy and freedom of speech,” Susanna argued.

“I actually agree I can’t get cross about that,” Richard replied.

“I think it’s ridiculous opening themselves up to scorn, because it’s so unintelligent it doesn’t stack up for a second but that’s what students do, that’s their job, they wind us up.”
