Chantelle Atkins (Jessica Plummer) attempted to make her exit in EastEnders, but husband Gray’s (Toby-Alexander Smith) unexpected return ultimately foiled her plan.
With lockdown having been particularly difficult for Chantelle, she decided enough was enough, and therefore starting divorce proceedings.
However, Gray — having suspected that she was up to something — installed a tracker on her phone, and ultimately decided to show her that he’s in control, by forcing her to spend two minutes submerged in water.
He claimed such a challenge would prove that she wanted to save their marriage, but Chantelle became more frightened about what he was capable of, and thus decided that she’s going to leave.
In tonight’s episode (September 10), she waited for Gray to go to work, and thus put final preparations in order, before pawning her engagement ring to get the cash needed to secure a place for she, Mackenzie and Mia to live.
After a heartbreaking farewell with Karen (Lorraine Stanley) and Mitch (Roger Griffiths), she headed back to No. 1 Albert Square and got everything she needed.
Kheerat (Jaz Deol) confronted Chantelle about her plan, but little did she know Gray had arrived home from work early — and he berated his wife for speaking to Kheerat.
Kheerat’s suspicions were raised, as he watched Gray lead Chantelle back inside.
Meanwhile, a devastated Chantelle hid her cash in the bathroom, as she came to terms with the fact that her plan was foiled.
Gray discovered her missing engagement ring, and quizzed her on its whereabouts.
What will Chantelle say?
