The iconic Addams Family returned to screens and landed on Netflix with a different insight into the comedy-horror, titled Wednesday. Following its release, director Tim Burton praised actress Jenna Ortega for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams.
Wednesday took fans by storm and became a roaring success as millions tuned into the spin-off of the cult classic.
The spooky drama was given a huge makeover as it followed Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy.
The teenager tried to master her psychic abilities and solve mysteries which embodied her parents 25 years ago.
While fans were taken aback and impressed by Jenna’s portrayal, the acclaimed director Tim Burton also took the time to praise the young actress.
During a recent interview, he stated: “Jenna’s one of the most talented people I’ve worked with.
“She’s like a silent movie actress in the sense that she’s able to convey things without words. “
Her words are very strong, and she’s got a very strong point of view, but to show the subtleties underneath that was very, very exciting.”
Tim continued: “It’s exciting to see Wednesday as an older character, we usually see Wednesday as a younger girl, and so it was exciting to explore those weird feelings you have as a teenager that sometimes never really leave you.”
Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, Tim added: “Jenna just gives it a real reality, which is fun because the themes are so real to me, to see it come to life and feel more real was exciting.”
Wednesday became a clear hit with streamers as it quickly shot to the top of the charts after its release.
As viewers and critics praised Jenna’s performance many questioned whether the drama would be renewed for another season.
While it became evident eight episodes weren’t enough for fans, they will have to wait for confirmation from Netflix over the coming weeks as the streaming giant keeps a close eye on the show’s success.
Despite this, co-showrunner Al Gough teased Wednesday and her parents Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán) could return for another season.
“We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles.
“Catherine is, I think, an iconic Morticia,” Al added in an interview with TV Line.
“The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important.
“[We] definitely want to feature the family as we did this season in a couple of episodes if we were to get a second season.”
Al explained: “The series is really about a girl who sees the world in black and white, and learning there are shades of grey.
“I think like any relationship or any friendship, it can get complicated by other factors.
“It’s never going to be smooth sailing. And it’s really her learning to navigate the ups and downs of friendship.”
Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix.
