Tired eyes from too much screen time? This supplement’s key nutrients will protect your eye health (you need more than carrots)

How long do you think you’ll spend looking at a screen today? If you’re close to the UK average, it’s likely more than six hours.

Phones, tablets, laptops, TVs – screens have become essential in our everyday lives for both work and play, and it’s hard to look away.

One recent survey of UK adults found that half of respondents were spending 11 hours or more a day looking at screens, and a quarter on 14 hours or more.

How long do you think you’ll spend looking at a screen today? If you’re close to the UK average, it’s likely more than six hours

We used to be warned we’d get ‘square eyes’ if we stared too long at the TV – and it really does take a toll on eye health, leading to digital eye strain, headaches and dry, tired eyes.

For this year’s National Eye Health Week (19th to 25th September), more of us than ever are likely to be focused on how we can take better care of our vision.

Regular sight tests, frequent screen breaks and reducing screen glare can all help, but our long-term eye health really depends a lot on what we eat.

Research has found that healthy eyes contain high levels of nutrients called lutein and zeaxanthin, types of carotenoid which can filter damaging, high-energy blue wavelength light by as much as 90%. Blue light is emitted in significant amounts by the screens of our phones, tablets and other digital devices.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are also very powerful antioxidants, protecting our eyes from issues linked to oxidative stress such as fatigue, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and digital eye strain, amongst others.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the macula, a tiny part of the eye at the centre of the retina used for distinguishing colours, fine detail, and central vision – all vital for activities like reading, writing and driving.

Together with isomer meso-zeaxanthin, they form the macular pigment, which plays a key role in visual performance.

Although we can obtain lutein and zeaxanthin from our diets, commonly from eggs, dark leafy greens like kale, and brightly coloured fruit and veg like carrots and corn, many of us simply don’t get enough of these essential nutrients.

FutureYou Cambridge developed Vision+, an innovative formulation combining lutein and zeaxanthin with lycopene, zinc and vitamin E

‘Lutein and zeaxanthin both have a strong antioxidant capacity, which means they can quickly react in the body before they have a chance to build up in the retina and be useful for eye health,’ explains Dr Miriam Ferrer, PhD, from FutureYou Cambridge, a leading UK developer of science-backed nutritional supplements.

To overcome this challenge, FutureYou Cambridge developed Vision+, an innovative formulation combining lutein and zeaxanthin with lycopene, zinc and vitamin E.

‘Vision+ uses a unique delivery system in which highly reactive lycopene extract from tomatoes acts as a kind of ‘decoy’, harmlessly oxidising in the body so more of the lutein and zeaxanthin can be delivered intact to the eyes,’ says Dr Ferrer.

‘Vision+ also contains zinc, which contributes to the maintenance of normal vision. Both zinc and vitamin E help to protect eye cells from oxidative stress, which can have a detrimental effect on eye health.’

Christine says she noticed an improvement in her sight within ‘days’ of taking Vision+

Christine Hill, 68, from Cambridgeshire decided to try Vision+ after experiencing issues with her eyesight, including eye discomfort. ‘Within days, I noticed the difference,’ she says. ‘I couldn’t believe it.’

‘Where we live, we look out quite a distance across fields, and I suddenly noticed it was all becoming clearer. My eyes didn’t feel so gritty.

‘My sight was clearer, my eyes felt more comfortable, and it gave me a lot more confidence while driving. I tell everyone about it. I couldn’t praise it enough.’

Ted, 40, from Saint Neots had a similar experience, partly caused by his job as a software developer.

‘I work all day using a screen. And when it’s your job, you have to do it, even if you’re feeling tired,’ he says.

‘I also like to read a lot in the evening, on a screen or on paper. But my eyes used to feel tired after about an hour, which was really frustrating.

‘When I heard about Vision+, I thought, okay, it’s maintenance for your eyes – how about I try it?

‘After about a month or two, I discovered that I could continue reading for two or three hours in an evening without feeling tired or getting itchy eyes.

‘Reading is important for me, and I feel it’s really working better with Vision+.’

‘Lutein and zeaxanthin are two amazing ingredients that fortify the eyes’ natural defences,’ explains optometrist Dhruvin Patel

Optometrist Dhruvin Patel, the founder of Ocushield, has spent years studying the effects of screen time on our health, developing medically rated screen protectors and glasses that filter out harmful blue light.

‘Since the pandemic, I think people have been really feeling ‘zoom fatigue’ and are now a lot more aware of screen time and its impacts,’ he says. ‘Extended screen time has been shown to affect our sleep, as artificial blue light suppresses a hormone called melatonin which tells the body when it’s time to rest.’

‘Lutein and zeaxanthin are two amazing ingredients that fortify the eyes’ natural defences against UV and blue light. There’s nothing better for protecting the retina and macular, and supplementing them can help people look after their eye health.’

Archie Russell was told by his optician that he had some age-related macular degeneration. So he decided to give Vision+ a try

Clear-eyed attention to detail has always been important to 83-year-old architect Archie Russell, who remains hard at work as grants secretary for the Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trust, raising money for the repair of parish churches.

Archie was concerned when his optician warned during a check-up that he had detected a degree of age-related macular degeneration.

‘It wasn’t too far advanced, but he gave me a shopping list of the right sorts of fruit and veg to eat to help,’ remembers Archie.

Archie’s wife Madeline was taking Turmeric+ from FutureYou Cambridge, and it was doing ‘no end of good’. So he decided to give Vision+ a try.

At the next visit to the optician for a check-up about a year later, he was amazed.

‘The degradation had not increased at all. So taking Vision+ has made a very significant and positive difference.

‘I wasn’t actively targeting foods that might have made a difference. The difference was made by taking Vision+. It has done an absolutely splendid job.

‘I’m delighted to recommend it. It’s worked for me and I’m sure it will help others.’

We all care deeply about our precious eyesight, but not many of us are sure of how best to take care of it, with 60% of us in the UK unaware of the key link between eye health and nutrition, according to Vision Matters.

‘A healthy diet, quitting smoking, moderate exercise and regular visits to the optician are all supportive for eye health,’ advises Dr Ferrer. ‘Unfortunately, today’s busy lifestyles mean many people miss out on essential nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin in their daily diets, and an effective, high-quality nutritional supplement like Vision+ helps you stay replenished.

‘As part of National Eye Health Week we’re offering people the opportunity to try a free pack of Vision+ for just the cost of the postage. We hope many more people share a positive experience like that of Christine, Ted and Archie.’
