NBC News’ Kristen Welker is married to marketing executive John Hughes.
The two were set up by mutual friends in 2014 and they eventually married three years later in Philadelphia.
Who is Kristen Welker's husband John Hughes?
John Hughes, 47, is a marketing executive at Merck.
He reportedly obtained that role in 2015 but had been working with the company since 2006.
When did they get married?
John and Kristen got married in 2017 at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia, just a block from where they had their first date.
He proposed to her during the 2016 campaign trail since she was working to cover it for the network.
Kristen told John that she would be in Washington D.C. for only 24 hours and he met her there, took her to the steps of Lincoln Memorial and popped the question.
“I wanted to ask her outside in a place you could walk by years later and tell your kids that this was the spot we got engaged,” he told the New York Times.
The NBC correspondent admitted to feeling worried that she had not found someone or met “the right guy” at her age.
“This happens for everyone else, but it may not happen for me,” she mentioned to the Times about the possibility of not finding love.
She had also blown off John a few times due to the demanding nature of her job and her busy schedule.
His plan to win her over was just to be himself and be lighthearted.
“I remember thinking to myself, ‘If I can just make her laugh, maybe I’ll have a chance,’” he said.
Kristen knew he was a good match for her because she felt at ease when being around him.
The two complimented each other despite being opposites.
“He allowed me to be me,” she said.
“And he’s incredibly calm, while I’m typically talking 100 miles a minute.”
